Description: The Bicolor Parrot is a peaceful fish that is endemic to the Red Sea. As a juvenile, the Bicolor Parrot is white with an orange eye and a thick, orange vertical band running around its head. They also have a large, black spot displayed on their dorsal fin. As this fish grows into adulthood they can change color, depending on the sex of the fish. Males will be a bright blue-green color with pink highlighting their scales and fins. Females are less vibrant, being solid black with a contrasting white band running horizontally beneath the dorsal fin. In the wild, parrotfish use their "beak" to scrape algae off of dead coral skeletons. Once they digest the algae, the rest of the skeleton is passed through as clean sand. This makes the Bicolor Parrot not reef safe, as it will eat both dead and living coral. This fish is best kept in a large, fish-only aquarium with other large, peaceful or semi-aggressive fish. Be sure to provide plenty of seaweed in their diet, along with a high-quality marine fish pellet and meaty frozen foods. This fish needs an ample amount of swimming room and rockwork to feel comfortable in the home aquarium. The Bicolor Parrot will cover itself in a "mucus cocoon" to sleep during the night.
